Reuters scores rare interview with Canada's Prime Minister on yuan

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, speaking on Monday June 21, ahead of the G20 summit he will chair on June 26-27, gave Reuters a rare interview in which he welcomed China’s move to let the yuan strengthen but also said it was too early to tell whether the change in currency policy would have the desired results of lessening China’s trade advantages. Harper said the deficit reduction targets he had laid out for the G20 were the minimum level nations should be aiming at, which could cause problems for some member states. Turning to domestic politics, Harper said he was not pressing for an election in the autumn of 2010. Political observers had speculated that he would try to take advantage of disarray in the opposition to press home his advantage at the polls.
