Reuters first with Guinea election result and impact on mining sector

Reuters was over an hour ahead of rivals such as Bloomberg and Dow Junes with news that Guinea`s former prime minister Cellou Dalein Diallo won its June 27 presidential election, although not by a wide enough margin to avoid a run-off. Reuters followed up the initial election results with contextualised updates setting out what happens next and who might be the kingmaker in the second round. Reuters followed up on July 11 with an interview with Diallo in which he said he wanted to renegotiate minerals deals deemed unbeneficial to Guinea. Top mining firms have been drawn to Guinea by its large reserves of bauxite (for aluminium), iron ore, gold and diamonds.
