Reuters breaks news of first breakthrough in stemming BP oil spill
05.16.2010
Reuters was the first news organisation to reveal on May 16 that BP had its first success in stemming the flow of oil from a leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico. After weeks of pumping oil into the sea and several failed attempts to halt or reduce the leak, a source close to the operation told Reuters that BP managed to successfully insert a tube into the leaking oil pipe, and capture some oil and gas. Reuters was followed later by the Wall Street Journal online/Dow Jones. Bloomberg relied on a pickup from the WSJ, until BP confirmed the news two hours after the Reuters story. News of the success, albeit limited, featured on TV and radio news reports across the world and made front page news the following day. BP shares rose 1 pct higher the following day on the news.
