Reuters breaks news of dramatic attack on Indian train
05.28.2010
Before dawn on May 28, when Maoist rebels derailed a high-speed train in eastern India, sending it into the path of a goods train and killing at least 71 people, Reuters was first to flash the news around the globe. Both Dow Jones and Bloomberg quoted Reuters in their first reports on the incident. Reuters was also 20 minutes ahead of Dow Jones in reporting the initial toll of 25, even beating local television reports. It was one of the deadliest Maoist attacks in four decades of insurgency. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has branded the Maoists India’s gravest internal security threat. Last year was the deadliest in their armed struggle at more than 1,000 deaths.
