Afghanistan’s former intelligence service chief granted Reuters an exclusive interview on June 7, the day after he resigned, shining a crucial light on tensions within the government over President Hamid Karzai’s plans to reach out to Taliban insurgents for talks. Amrullah Saleh, who quit as head of the National Directorate for Security after an attack on a peace conference in Kabul, said that “negotiating with suicide bombers will disgrace this country”, and added that one of the main reasons he had resigned was because Karzai had ordered a review of Taliban insurgents in detention. He also spoke out strongly about what he called Pakistani involvement in attacks in Afghanistan, describing Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency as “part of the landscape of destruction”.
