First to report deadly bombings in Uganda, linked to Somali Islamist group.
07.14.2010
Reuters was 20 minutes ahead of international rivals in reporting that bombs had exploded among soccer fans watching the World Cup final at two venues in the Ugandan capital, Kampala. The bombs killed 73 people and raised alarm among security experts because it was the first foreign operation by Somali-based Islamists in league with al Qaeda. Our correspondents were ahead on the blasts, on the rising death toll and suspicion falling on the militants operating out of neighbouring Somalia, raising the prospect of insecurity spreading to other parts of East Africa.
