Ahead on survival of Chile miners and how they will survive until rescued
08.22.2010
Reuters dominated coverage of the miraculous survival of 33 trapped miners in a gold and copper mine in Chile. Reuters beat Bloomberg, Dow Jones, AP and AFP by nearly an hour on Aug 22 with a pick-up from state TV that the miners trapped deep inside a mine 17 days earlier were still alive. We were also way ahead with subsequent alerts from rescue workers and President Pinera and had a multimedia team at the mine head in northern Chile by the evening. The team won huge play in papers and on websites across the world on miners and relatives sending love letters down a tiny drill hole and on survival tips rescuers hope to learn from outer space and the ocean depths. Bloomberg snapped the fact the government had turned to NASA for help 36 hours after our agenda-setting sidebar on space and the oceans hit the wire.
