Talk of Asia’s decoupling from the West is in the air again. Reuters Sept 13 ANALYSIS finds that Asia will indeed slow if activity in advanced economies cools. However, evidence in August pointed to resilience in domestic demand in Asia, particularly in China. If China’s economy has reached a cruising speed as the European and U.S. economies slow further from the second quarter, then the Middle Kingdom may once again lead the global economy’s growth. That, in a word, would be decoupling.
