Huge media interest after Uruguay World cup soccer star tells Reuters he wants club move

Months of patience paid off for Reuters sports reporters who bagged an exclusive interview with Atletico Madrid and Uruguay striker Diego Forlan, voted leading player at this year’s World Cup finals, who revealed he was open to a club move. Forlan, highly articulate in English as well as Spanish, revealed on October 4th he would leave Atletico if the right offer came along. Most had assumed Forlan, probably worth tens of millions of euros in the transfer market, was set to stay at Atletico so the story had a huge impact globally. “Foul”, cried Atletico who claimed Forlan had been misquoted, until the Reuters team showed them video of him making his newsworthy remarks in full. The interview request was lodged before the World Cup finals in South Africa where Forlan guided Uruguay to the semi-finals with a string of inspired performances.
