Out front with European Central Bank’s next move

Out front with European Central Bank’s next move

The euro hit a 15-month high against the dollar on April 13 after Reuters was first with comments by newly-installed Belgian central bank chief Luc Coene, who said the ECB’s first interest rate hike in over two years should not be seen as a one-off step. Dow Jones and Bloomberg were both behind with the news. After the ECB raised rates the previous week but gave little clarity on the next step, Coene’s intervention was a major development. His comments to a Belgian business magazine were buried deep in its website and not obvious from the story headline. Reuters’ close contacts with the central bank pointed it to the report, which appeared online at least a day before it turned up in the print version of the magazine.
