Reuters managed to get exclusive comments on how one of China`s most famous dissidents, the artist Ai Weiwei, was treated during his detention by the authorities earlier this year which created an international outcry. A source familiar with the events gave a Reuters correspondent the first in depth account of what happened. Ai, who was released in June, had endured intense psychological pressure during his 81 days in secretive detention and still faces the threat of prison for alleged subversion. It included graphic detail of his treatment. The story was picked up widely by newspapers including the Telegraph and the Guardian, which said that “very little has been known so far about Ai’s detention.” The Wall St Journal had its own version of the story two days later.
