VMware shares recovered about 7 percent from early losses soon after Reuters exclusively reported on July 23 that EMC CEO Joseph Tucci is open to a spinning off the company’s stake in VMware, citing comments from Tucci in a Q&A on the company’s analyst call and a separate Reuters interview. Reuters and Dow Jones did not report the story at all. Tucci’s comments revealed a change in stance from remarks that company executives made in May that helped sent EMC’s market value down about a third over the past two months.
