Reuters breaks news on plot by militants to attack Obama

An intelligence expert close to police investigations into July’s suicide bomb attacks in Jakarta exclusively told Reuters that Islamic militants also planned to use snipers to attack Barack Obama’s convoy when the U.S. president visits Indonesia later this year. The story on August 20 included intricate details of the plot and showed that police were looking at a new al Qaeda link for the funding of attacks by militants in the Southeast Asian country. Revelations of the plot, which also included a possible plan to attack November’s APEC summit in Singapore, demonstrated that the ambitions of Indonesia’s militants may run far higher than first thought, posing a serious threat to security in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and the wider region.
