First to report U.S backing away from support of Zelaya
08.05.2009
Reuters clients were first to learn on Aug 5 of a softening of U.S. support for ousted Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya. Reuters obtained a letter written by the State Department to U.S. Senator Richard Lugar stating that U.S. policy on Honduras was not aimed at supporting any particular individual, and indicating severe economic sanctions were not being considered against the interim government that replaced Zelaya in the coffee and textile-producing Central American country. No matching story was seen on Dow Jones and Bloomberg picked up the Reuters story via a link to the ABC News website the next day. The story caused a stir across Latin America and was used widely in regional media.
