Reuters gave investors vital insight into Hungary’s medium and long-term economic policy by interviewing Viktor Orban, the leader of centre-right opposition, whose party looks almost certain to be running the government after elections in April. In this exclusive interview on June 10, Orban said Hungary would need a new IMF deal in 2010 to help rebuild its economy and called for a higher budget deficit to boost growth. He also predicted Hungary would fail in its goal of joining the euro by 2014. The interview was picked up by almost all Hungarian media and caused a stir within the investment community. One analyst commented: “Read your interview with Orban… very interesting, very timely, very useful reading. Thanks as always.”
