Reuters first with North Korea nuclear test
05.25.2009
When North Korea conducted a nuclear test on May 25, Reuters was the first international media organisation to carry the news. Reuters flashed the report carried by the South Korean news agency Yonhap at 0230:30 GMT, more than 2-1/2 minutes ahead of Bloomberg and about three minutes ahead of Dow Jones. North Korea had signalled some weeks earlier that it was planning a nuclear test, but the blast came sooner than expected. South Korea’s main stock market index fell by up to 6 percent and the won moved sharply immediately after the Reuters flash, losing one percent against the dollar. Impoverished North Korea’s increasingly belligerent behaviour has become a key geo-political risk for East Asia, which accounts for around one-sixth of the global economy.
