Reuters Mexico interview with presidential candidate sets agenda for investors
05.14.2009
Reuters scored a rare interview with Mexico City’s leftist mayor Marcelo Ebrard, who went further than ever before in outlining his presidential ambitions for 2012. Ebrard said he would curb the power of big companies like America Movil, Telmex and Televisa, probably keep private cash out of state oil company Pemex and have no fear in following clearly leftist policies. The May 14 interview was a boon for investors looking at the long-term trends in Mexico. The story won a front-page splash in leading newspaper El Universal, was all over TV and radio shows and set the news agenda in Mexico for several days. Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s Telmex company called Reuters asking for more details on what Ebrard said.
