First to report expulsion of Darfur aid workers in escalation of Sudan crisis
03.04.2009
Reuters broke the news on March 4 that Sudan would kick out aid workers from Darfur in retaliation for the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir. Before the expulsions, the United Nations and aid groups were running the world’s largest humanitarian operation in Darfur where, international experts say, almost six years of conflict have killed 200,000 people. Aid officials have warned the expulsions will hit other areas of northern Sudan, particularly along the contested border with the semi-autonomous south. The Reuters exclusive moved at 1651 GMT, two hours before Bloomberg’s story.
