It began with a Jan 29 interview with an aide to President Ahmadinejad that broke news he would run for reelection this year. Bloomberg and others had to pick up the Reuters story, which got extensive coverage. Within a week came another outstanding exclusive — an ally of ex-President Khatami told us he was likely to announce within days that he will also run. So within a week Reuters has confirmed who will be the main runner’s in this year’s closely-watched presidential election. Its outcome will be key to assessing Iran’s future attitude to the United States and the Islamic state’s nuclear programme. Energy investors are particularly focused on news from Iran.
