Bangkok reporters track down exiled political leader
11.04.2008
Reuters reporters in Thailand were the first to locate exiled political leader Thaksin Shinawatra after his visa for Britain was revoked. Long-standing contacts with Thaksin allowed our Bangkok team to find the former prime minister in China and quiz him on his next steps. Thaksin is still a potent political force, despite being ousted by a coup in 2006 and being convicted for breaking a conflict-of-interest law while in office. Thaksin denied he was settling in China and refused to disclose his next location. His appearance drew huge interest in his native land, where markets have been deeply unsettled by a political conflict lasting more than three years.
