When Russian President Dmitry Medvedev delivered his first state of the nation address on November 5, investors were keen to hear what he would say about the financial crisis, relations with the West and U.S. President-elect Barack Obama. He addressed all of these issues and also sprung a surprise by proposing to extend the presidential term to six years and by announcing Russia would deploy missiles in the Kaliningrad region that borders Poland - a direct challenge to the United States’ missile system.
