First with name of Germany’s new finance minister.
10.23.2009
Reuters was out in front of other international news providers in naming Germany’s new finance minister. The story was sourced to those involved in coalition talks. On Oct 23 Reuters reported that Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted Wolfgang Schaeuble for finance minister. The choice of Schaeuble, interior minister in the previous government, was unexpected. Schaeuble had criticised Merkel’s campaign pledge to cut taxes and has often been an uncomfortable presence in her cabinet but analysts said his appointment may be a sign of Merkel’s determination to cut the budget deficit and take tough steps to steer Germany out of its deepest recesssion in 60 years. Bloomberg had to pick up a German media report for the story. Confirmation of Schaeuble’s appointment came the following day.
