First to report UN envoy in Kabul to be replaced

Reuters broke the news on Dec 10 that U.N. special envoy to Afghanistan Kai Eide will soon be stepping aside and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is already considering several candidates to replace him. The story, based on information from UN sources and diplomats from the Security Council, also broke the news that NATOs ISAF force in Afghanistan would be appointing a civilian representative to work alongside the UN envoy to help implement Obamas planned civilian surge as part of the new U.S. Afghan strategy. Some 12 hours later Eide confirmed that he had asked Ban to begin looking for a replacement for the post, which will be one of the UN chiefs most closely watched appointments. Only then were Reuters competitors able to match our story.
