Reuters first on deadly Chile earthquake
02.27.2010
Reuters was well ahead when an 8.8-magnitude earthquake — one of the biggest in a century — ravaged Chile in the early hours of Saturday, February 27. We were 3 minutes ahead of Bloomberg and 8 minutes ahead of Dow Jones with news of the tremor and then led as the death toll rose throughout the day. Our teams on the ground produced quick, detailed coverage of the hundreds of casualties and the impact on mines in the world’s top copper producer. We were consistently ahead on news of shutdowns and restarts at natural resources facilities. Copper prices initially jumped more than 5 percent on the supply worries but they later eased as the affected mines resumed operations.
