Reuters dominates coverage of Chicago Cubs' sales saga
07.06.2009
Reuters was first report on July 6 that Chicago investment banker and son of AmeriTrade’s founder Tom Ricketts had a deal to buy the Chicago Cubs baseball team from the Tribune Co, bringing his family a step closer to owning the storied baseball team. Bloomberg was not able to match the story until almost an hour later and the Chicago Tribune, Tribune Cos own paper, also trailed Reuters. Reuters was also the only outlet to report the agreement is for less than the $900 million originally agreed to in January. Then, on July 7 we were out front in reporting that private equity investor Marc Utay was not out of the running in the bidding for the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Reuters reported that Utays offer was higher but included less cash. CNBC and WBBM immediately picked up the news and cited Reuters.
